A number of insects, mainly beetles, are able to use wood as a food source
and some of them can cause serious damage to building timbers. Although
there are variations in the type of wood attacked and the extent and type
of damage caused.

- Common furniture beetle (Anobium punctatum)
- is the commonest cause of insect attack of softwoods in buildings,
often found in structural timbers, roofs, floors and joists.

- Deathwatch beetle (Xestobium rufovillosum)
- causes deterioration of structural hardwoods, e.g. oak, elm and chesnut,
already partly decayed by wet rot. This is a pest of larger dimension
timbers in older buildings.

- Wood boring weevil (Pentarthrum luttoni and Euophryum confine)
- will only inhabit decayed timber or timber with a high moisture content.
No insecticidal treatment is required. Remove source of dampness and renew any structurally weakened timber. Infestation of sound, dry wood is not possible.

Heritage Preservation (Remedials) Ltd will undertake a detailed remedial
survey. If an active infestation of Wood Boring Beetle is found a full
report and recommendation will submitted, detailing treatment required
for the eradication of the infestation.
